    It used to be under part 15 rules that you could have a 100 milli watt
station on the air with no license as long as you didn't interfere
with other stations that were licensed and the antenna and feedline
did not exceed 10 feet total. Allied Radio made a wireless phono
oscilator with one or two tubes that they sold that fit this category.
Many teenagers were DJs for their neighborhood. Now you can buy a
Ramsey solid state unit for $10.
    The other choice was carrier current transmitter that used ac house
wiring
for an antenna and was limited in field strength.  At Manchester college
we had a 10 watt AM transmitter with RG/8 coax going to each dorm with a
coupler into the AC wiring. worked pretty good. You could hear the station
a couple hundred feet from the dorm, except along the rail road tracks
where you could hear it for miles.
