I think the monthly cost for the off premise extension used to be $6.50 
per month. That was what we used to pay.
If this line is not available, it would be possible to run a 440 MHz 
link to someone's house or to EMA or somewhere else, or even to Red 
Cross for the auto patch. It would take quite a bit of work, but it is 
possible. I am not sure it would be worth it. The need for an auto patch 
has certainly decresed over the years as cell phones have grown.
However, at busy times the cell phones are not useable. Right after the 
super bowl was over I was not able to make any cell phone calls. I 
suspect too many other people were trying at the same time to make 
calls. In a real emergency it could be needed. However a manual patch 
might be a possibility for a big disaster.
