Greetings ya'll!!
You can tell this is getting very close to wrapping up. It's getting harder to come up with a way to start these emails. In any case as it gets closer there's some things we still have to talk about. Tonight it's about those little tiny details that we all seem to forget about unless we already have a well stocked "go kit" that we are familliar with and use regularly. Speaking of those "things" lets go down the list.
1. Bug Spray (prefereably with DEET)-If you were out there tonight helping with site prep you know just how viscious those farm bugs can get! This isn't really a bad year for bugs either. I remember seeing them so big they'd carry off a small child. They could do that because as my Dad would say....they have at least 4 engines on each wing! I thought that was impossible but as I grew older I got to see the B-52 and how it does indeed have 4 engines on each wing. Anyway that's way out of the topic....Bottom line here, bring bug spray or prepare to be bitten.....ALOT! I can't nor will I accept any responsibility regarding anyone being bitten by bugs. Consider yourselves informed, advised and warned!!!
2. Sunscreen- This was Marisa's idea. Her skin is extremely fair so she naturally thinks of this. I don't know how sunny it'll be over the weekend but remember also you can get sunburn from a cloudy day as easily as a sunny one.
3. Water- I know there will be water there and drinks there as well. There's no sin in using it either but if you anticipate needing it, bringing some you'll rarely if ever need it. This is how Dave and I decide what we need to bring to a work session.
4. A hat! Never underestimate the importance or the effectiveness of the hat on a thinly covered head. Not to mention if your hair is a little longer the front of the hat will help keep the hair off the back of your neck keeping you much cooler.
5. A hand held radio if you have one. As Marisa says "this should be a Duh, but you never know" Agreed this should be a natural act for us. Especially for setup and Field Day. It's a great deal easier to talk on the radio to someone at the back of the field from the front. Not to mention, if you're sent to get something such as supplies or gasoline or something else, how do you get hold of someone back at the site if something changed? We all know we're amateurs but we can be professional in how we do what we do.
6. A snack! Sometimes we have leftovers after the cookout and those sometimes make for a great midnight snack but if by chance there isn't something there you really like then it's not necessarily a bad thing to have something you know you'll like. Ya'll know when your stomach calls CQ it's usually serious about that kinda stuff.
Keep in mind this is only a few items that Marisa helped me come up with. I'm sure your own mental checklists have lots of the same but some different things. That said just make sure we all remember the stuff we want to bring and try not to forget stuff. I'm considering this as true as possible to the spirit of Emergency Comm. If you didn't bring it, you don't have it!! Have a wonderful night everyone and see you tomorrow around noon.
