I only met Vern a time or two, didn't know him that well, but we ought to 
take a moment a remember him for his bravery and service to his country, 
especially during the invasion of Normandy in 1944.  May he rest in eternal 
peace.
 
Vernon D. Gill, 84, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2007, at Johnson 
Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was a resident of Franklin.
 
He was born Jan. 29, 1923, in Montezuma. His parents were Otto Herman and 
Winnie Opal (Huffman) Gill.
 
Mr. Gill is survived by his daughter, Barbara Brownfield (Dennis) of 
Trafalgar; two brothers, Raymond Gill (Axie) of Montezuma and John Gill 
(Betty) of Belton, Texas; two sisters, Patricia Randolph (Ike) of Cape 
Coral, Fla., and Anita Lou Busenbark of Rockville; three grandchildren, 
Jeffrey (Dawn), Kip (Tina) and Troy Brownfield; six great-grandchildren; and 
several nieces and nephews.
 
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene F. Gill; his parents; a son, 
Donald Bruce Gill; and two brothers, James Gill and Charles Gill.
 
He graduated from Montezuma High School.
 
Mr. Gill served our country in the Army for four years during World War II 
and was at the invasion of Normandy.
 
Mr. Gill worked for B&O Railroad for 10 years. He retired from Eli Lilly and 
Co. in 1980 after working as an engineer for 34 years.
 
An avid Mason, Mr. Gill was a member and past master of Bargersville Lodge 
679. He also was secretary for 22 years. He was a past worthy patron 11 
times of Eastern Star 470. He was a member of the Midstate Amateur Radio 
Club.
 
The Revs. Steve Fair and Jeff Johnson will conduct a celebration of life 
service at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service and 
Crematory, Vandivier-Tudor Chapel, 951 N. Main St., Franklin. Friends may 
call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fair Haven 
Christian Church, 1476 W. County Road 300S, Franklin, IN 46131; or to 
Homeview Health and Rehab, 651 S. State St., Franklin, IN 46131.
