[Ccarc] Fw: sever weather nets

Greetings all,

The email below was forwarded to me today. As the EC I have to say it concerns me greatly that any ARES organization anywhere is being thought of "in name only". It bothers me even more for them to not be recognized by their local emergency services when they could be utilized and integrated so easily to the current plan.
So as not to be accused of trying to "sweep someone elses porch when my own is dirty" I have to recognize that locally we have things to worry about. At this time there are only three registered ARES members in Cass county. Yes, you read that correctly, THREE total. Pardon me for being totally frank, but that is just pitiful. For as many folks that we can scare up for a weather net, or operate at Field Day to only have three people registered as ARES members almost frightens me. Registering for ARES does not obligate you for anything more than you're already obligated to, and you do not have to be an ARRL member. It does however provide the EC and other emergency planners the ability to see who is out there, with what training and what equipment you have so we can hopefully provide an appropriate response to support the agencies that need and request our support. As stated, this is not an obligation but a request for help when the crap that can't possibly happen, happens.
Registration couldn't be simpler as it is with today's technology. Simply go to the website http://www.inarrl.org/inares_index.html From this point you can see the various links available to you. The one I'm most concerned about is "Register with ARES" but you are free to browse the other pages and I highly recommend them. Once you click on the registration page link the new window will pop up and open with the registration page. Just fill out the page to the best of your ability. Once you finish click on submit and this information will be immediately forwarded to Tony Langer our Section EC. He will then forward it to me if you live in Cass county. For those that live outside the county you can still be part of Cass County ARES in addition to the county where you live if you so wish to. Just make that note in the comments section and we'll do our part.
I would ask that you fill out the form only if you're serious about helping. As previously stated you aren't obligated to do things when stuff happens, if you're not available, you aren't available that's just all there is to it. However I don't want to just pad the membership with names to make things look good, I do want serious interest in this. We have the ability to be part of a great organization as well as lead our area in how ARES operations are done in addition to giving back to our community and hobby what it's given to us. What better way in this Thanksgiving season to show how thankful you are to share your hobby that can provide such a great service when it's most needed. If anyone has any questions or comments, my ears are open and I can brew a pot of coffee if you want to sit and talk about it.
If I don't talk to you before Thursday.....have a safe, and happy Thanksgiving!!!

Phil:

The severe weather net for the Tippecanoe county area is supposed to be on 147.135 reapeter, however there is hardly a weather net brought up. This has been in discussion especially after one individual stated with the severe weather that past through our area in October "there was no need for a weather net". This statement made after the NWS placed Tippecanoe county under a tornado warning and multiple reports of funnel clouds reported by multiple public saftey agencies.

Basically ARES does not exist except for name only in Tippecanoe county, although many would like to argue the point. They are not recognized by any professional public service agency in Tippecanoe and I have heard form two separate public service agencies in Tippecanoe relate to hams as, and I quote "cowboys, wanting to do only what they want to do, their way or no way".

I do not mean to sound disrespectful in anyway, however I a member of a professional public service agency in Tippecanoe county, who has promoted amateur radio, only to have a few hams ruin all the work accomplished can only report the truth as it currently exists.

Respectfully

can you tell me where the severe weather nets are in the Lafayette
area? I live in Logansport, and was wondering if people monitor the
147.135 or the 440 repeater or just the 146.97 repeater?
  thanks
