Thanks for that information. Mel helped me learn a lot about ham radio in 1966 through 1968, when I lived in South Bend, helping me learn troublshooting and study for my 1st class commercial and extra, and helped me get a job at WNDU as an engineer running films and slides in 1968.
He was very active on 6 meters FM and 2 meters FM. He converted a lot of commercial FM equipment for people to use in the South Bend area. That was before you could buy ham FM equipment. All FM operation then was using commercial equipment modified for
ham frequencies, and all was crystal controlled. Activity was on 147.3 FM and 146.94 and 52.525. There were some repeaters
in Chicago, and maybe in Indianapolis and Ft. Wayne, but this was before Kokomo and Plymouth and Warsaw and South Bend

SOUTH BEND - Melvin Henry "Mel" Dzialak, residingin South Bend, IN,passed away at 11:20 a.m. Friday, April 18, 2008, in his home at theage of 63.He was born January 22, 1945, in Chicago, IL, to Henry A. and June E.(Nash)Dzialak, and had lived in South Bend most of his life. He attended <st1:placew:st="on">Purdue <st1:PlaceTypew:st="on">University</st1:PlaceType</st1:placeand graduated from DeVry Institute. On May 10, 1986, in <st1:placew:st="on">Mishawaka, <st1:Statew:st="on">IN</st1:State</st1:place,Mel was united in marriage to Carol "Cookie" Collins. His lovingwife, Cookie of 22 years, survives him along with his daughter, Heidi(Nathan)Daren of South Bend, and his grandson, Jacob Daren. Also surviving aretwosisters, Henrietta Crose of Mishawakaand Sonia (Bill) Henderson of South Bend. Mel retired in 2004 fromWNDU-TV asdirector of R.F. Operations following 39 years of employment, andcontinued todo private contracting for radio stations. He was a member of theSociety ofBroadcast Engineers, a member of the Lincoln Township Lions Club, FishLakeLions Club, a volunteer Fireman for Lincoln Township, and for 20 yearsservedas a 4-H leader with the St. Joseph County 4-H Fair Association, avolunteerwith Camp Millhouse, served as president of a Ham Radio Group, and wasa memberof RACES for FEMA. Services celebrating the life of Melvin HenryDzialak willbe held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, in Palmer FuneralHome-GuisingerChapel, 3718 SouthMichigan Street, South Bend.Jackie Walorski, afamily friend, will officiate. Graveside services and burial willfollow at SouthlawnCemetery. Thefamily will receive friendsfrom 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, April 21, in the Palmer FuneralHome-GuisingerChapel.
