Subject: [Inares] A.R.E.S. VHF Contest format exercise idea

I'm developing an exercise for the Allen County A.R.E.S. group with

the following goals:

1) Encourage operators to become familiar with the entire county, not

just the portions near home and work.

2) Explore equipment limitations by mapping useful contact range.

3) Keep it fun and short duration to increase participation.

4) Make it open to more than just A.R.E.S. members so it might

recruit new members.

I'm proposing a contest with the following rules;

a) Operate on 6m, 2m, 1.25m, or 70cm FM simplex frequencies only.

b) two station types: fixed or rover (rovers must stay within county

boundary)

c) two power classes allowed: <7W and 7 to 55W maximum

d) Exchange call sign, honest signal report, and zip code

of current location.

e) Sprint runs from 1pm to 3pm some designated Saturday afternoon.

f) Scoring as in national VHF contests

score = (band multiplier)x(#contacts)x(# different zip codes)

    band multiplier = 1x for 2m

                       2x for 6m

                       3x for 70cm

                       4x for 1.25m

I'd like to hear from other A.R.E.S. groups that have done similar

exercises or have useful comments about my proposed exercise.

73,

Joseph, K9RFZ

Allen County EC
