WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana - WLFI New technology may allow cell phones to detect dirty bombs in the U-S. Purdue researchers developed a way to use cell phones to detect radioactive material and pinpoint its location. Physics Professor Ephraim Fischbach said the group tested the system in November. The team used six cell phones with sensors to find a low level of hidden radioactive material. Fischbach
said putting the sensors into all cell phones and P-D-As would create a
network that could help police and other authorities located the
movement of dirty bombs and other radioactive materials within United
States. "If somebody were walking down Fifth Avenue in
Manhattan with such a radioactive source," said Physics Professor
Ephraim Fischbach. "You would have thousands of people with cell phones
and PDAs, laptops...having this system built in." Then you have many, many more people walking around and in a sense sensing what's going on more frequently. Fischbach said the technology is fairly cheap, adding about $100 to the cost of current cell phones. He said the group is currently looking for a company to develop the new technology. The research was made possible by a $25,000 grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
