I really enjoyed the field day this year. My family did also. Ethan, my 5 year old grandson made several GOTA contacts and Britiany, my 7 year old grandaughter made many. She was very excited about it. Her mom and dad also made one each. Even my wife made one. That really made my day. She is usually mike shy.
I enjoyed working cw on Sunday morning with Dan and I taking turns.
I was disapointed that none of the scouts showed up. Maybe next year.
Friday night I was told all the antennas were ready and tested. I had had known that was not the case I would have worked on them for a couple hours instead of answereing questions for John. I could have done that at another time.
Additional grounds and a counter poise would possibly help out the Bob tail curtain. Bill said that he saw intermittent problems when he put his network anaylzer (what a wonderful tool) on it and when he hit the ground with his fist the swr went crazy. He then changed it from 3 ft into the ground to just a few inches sticking up, and it was much better.
I did hear some people on .52 simplex at 3 am so I called them from the radio room inside and asked if they could switch to .43 and give us some points. I then ran outside and had Terry call them. He was able to make contact. They also tried 6 FM, but the antenna on the far end was just a dipole and not very hight. Silver Lake and Hammond, I think were where those two stations were.
The educational 30 minute session was an excellent idea. My son-in-law Travis really liked it. I think he is interested in getting his license. Then maybe the whole family will get more involed. I would sure like to see that.
I think we have some excellent operators, and I am happy that we give everyone a chance to do some things that they liked.
It was a good year. This location certainly has a lot of advantages besides saving money.
It was great that the GOTA station worked W1AW and also worked the station that the author of the logging software was using. At that point a pop up appeared on the screen to tell you that. Neat.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
On Saturday afternoon I was able to work my nephew in West Virgina on 40 meters. We had been trying to get together on the air for several months. He finally got some HF antennas up. That was a thrill. Phil Snider W9LVY ______________________
