NG 9-1-1 Project to Test RedSky Server (3/17)

RedSky Technologies announced that its 3G Location Information Server
(LIS) was chosen by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT)
next-generation 9-1-1 (NG 9-1-1) initiative to support proof-of-concept
testing of its new NG 9-1-1 architecture. The
server determines the physical location of VoIP-enabled devices and
communicates this location information back to the devices, as well as
to NG 9-1-1 network elements,” said Nicholas Maier, RedSky senior vice
president. The
NG 9-1-1 research and development project is funded by the DOT
Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office. The objective
of the NG 9-1-1 proof of concept is to test specific requirements
selected from a prioritized list developed by the NG 9-1-1 team with
input from a variety of 9-1-1 stakeholders. The
DOT is working with Booz Allen Hamilton as the prime contractor to
develop and validate requirements for the NG 9-1-1 system, define a
system architecture, and develop a transition plan that considers
responsibilities, costs, schedule and benefits for deploying IP-based
emergency services across the United States. Other members of the
project team include the National Emergency Number Association (NENA),
L. Robert Kimball & Associates and Texas A&M University. The
nationwide test is expected to begin in April and be completed in two
to three months. Following completion, the team will analyze the test
data, revise the system architecture as necessary and complete the
transition plan. Texas A&M will install the server in its Internet2
Technology Evaluation Center (ITEC) laboratory in College Station,
Texas.
