IWX Now Producing Super Resolution Radar DataThe
National Weather Service Northern Indiana (WFO IWX) is now
disseminating super resolution (super-res) radar data. Depending on the
radar Volume Coverage Pattern (VCP), super-res data will be available
for the lowest two or three elevation scans.
The data is not
currently available on any NWS website. However, some third party
vendors will be distributing the data. Check with your vendor if you
have questions with availability. The new data will be much more
helpful in radar interrogation, but it must be used with caution as it
will require an adjustment period to familiarize and understand the new
data.
The
legacy 4 and 8 bit data will still be available. Examples of the
difference between super-res (right) and legacy radar data (left) can
be seen below. For more information on super-res radar data click here.
Other documentation and training materials can be viewed at the National Weather Service - Warning Decision Training Branch website.
