But with his private meteorological firm, Central Weather Service, Mr. Finckle also provided custom weather forecasts for a variety of local businesses and customers: groundskeepers at Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park, pilots planning a flight, cement and roofing workers concerned about rain and farmers tending to their crops. "If your forecasts are accurate, your clients come back," Mr. Finckle told the Tribune in 1991. Mr. Finckle, 81, died of kidney and heart failure Friday, July 3, in Highland Park Hospital, said Sylvia, his wife of 61 years. Mr. Finckle, who was born and raised in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood, fell into his career of weather forecasting almost by accident, his wife said.When he aced an entrance exam upon joining the Air Force, Mr. Finckle told his superiors he was interested in pursuing cryptography. But his mother's Russian citizenship and Cold War politics prevented that career, and he chose the next best thing: meteorology. After training and working for seven years in the meteorology department at Chanute Air Force Base near Rantoul in central Illinois, Mr. Finckle took a compassionate discharge to take care of his teenage siblings when his mother died, his wife said. "I had a class that was half men and half women," he said. "Most were from the Midwest, but we did have two from New York State, one from California and one from South Carolina. We had representatives from all walks of the education world: Two elementary teachers, five junior high teachers, two high school teachers and one college professor. Only four were hams and two of them have expired licenses. The electronics knowledge level was low, but they were motivated and proved to be a joy to teach all week." McCray said that the highlights of the week included a successful AO-27 contact and multiple contacts on 2 meters with local children who were attending a camp. "The work with the VOMs, protoboard and building the boe-bots were also big hits," he said. "We also went quite deep with the 'What's a Microcontroller?' unit." One of the teachers told McCray that the Teachers Institute has changed the way she will present her curriculum. "I have been inspired to pursue my Technician license and to add more hands-on electronics activities into my 9th grade physical science class," the teacher said. "I would also like to set up a ham station in my school." Another teacher called the Teachers Institute a "most rewarding experience. There is so much I learned about robotics, weather and ham radio operation. I have so much information to take back to the classroom and share with my students and fellow staff members. Thank you for this opportunity!" A session of the ARRL Teachers Institute wrapped up Thursday, July 9 in Dayton, Ohio. Governor's Proclamation It seems that the Governor is cutting back on the number of proclamations that he is going to sign for any one organization. It was difficult for David, N9KT to obtain our proclamation this year due to the number already issued. If your group is planning a special occasion, please check with David SpoelstraN9KT prior to just applying for one. He should know what is going on at the Capital and at the Governor's office and if they will be willing to give you one. Since David is our Section Government Liaison, he should be in the loop on any request going before the Governor. News Coverage for Amateur Radio Week It was nice to see all the news coverage that you were able to achieve for Amateur Radio Week and Field Day. Not only was it covered in local newspapers, but some were able to get radio spots and television coverage. One club, Hamilton County even made the Google News Alert for their article in the Indianapolis Star. I was surprised at the fact that Tony, W9AL (SEC) and I only received 11 traffic messages. 100 points for a message sent via a traffic net that meets twice daily and even on Field Day, should be easy for any group to obtain. Keep this in mind for next year to help raise your score. Interesting E-mail Fact Out of the 3092 ARRL member we have here in Indiana only 1900 are signed up to get my and the Director's e-mails. You are missing out on the important information that goes via e-mails. It only takes a couple of seconds to go the ARRL.org website and mark the spot on your information page to receive these e-mails. However, there are several clubs listed on there that the link to their website is no longer working. While you are updating your website address, why not add the day of the month you meet and where you meet. This would help visitors know when to plan to come to a club meeting. Repeater owners Recently the Indiana Repeater Council sent out a notice that states you need to update your repeater coordination. Be sure to follow up on this as you don't want to lose your frequency and have it assigned to someone else. We have a problem with frequencies for 2 meter repeaters. The Council says there are none. If you have a paper repeater, one that is assigned, but not on the air anymore, let the Council know so they can reassign it to someone else. If you know of any that are no longer on the air let the Council know that as well. Let's free up some frequencies that are not really being used for those areas of the state that really need a good repeater. Indianapolis Hamfest The Indianapolis Hamfest was well attended. There was even a remark that more were there this year than last year. Despite the rain showers, everyone seemed to have a good time and some even found some good deals. Launch will occur at 13:50 UT (8:50 am Central Daylight Time) from Rantoul, IL (40.29 N, 88.14 W) The target ascent rate will be 1000 feet/min. APRS information will be sent over 144.39 MHz every minute under the call sign, W9YJ-11. The helium filled balloon will reach a float altitude of 70000 feet (21.5km) about 15:00 UT and will attempt to float at this altitude for about three hours. During this time the balloon should travel slowly to the NW from about 40.0N & 87.8W to 40.1 N & 88.1 W. The descent will begin about 18:00 UT on a slowly deflating balloon with landing about 19:30 UT. The uplink frequency on the radio will be 144.36 MHz, and the downlink frequency will be 446.025 MHz. The Scouts will be using the call sign WB9SA. If you have a chance to contact the station, the Scouts will be thrilled to make the contact! You may also attempt to use the repeater for a long distance Earth-Balloon-Earth contact with hams from larger distances. The NAB taps into something when it says ?broadcasting has lost an iconic ambassador for credible journalism? ? because ?Uncle Walter? was indeed a source you?d trust for news. It?s a shame that CBS? mandatory retirement age rule pushed him out at age 65 (or was CBS eager to install the younger Dan Rather in the anchor chair?). Cronkite continued to work practically until the end, at National Public Radio, on countless documentaries, and on behalf of charities he believed in. He inspired journalists, including a 14-year-old Robert Feder in suburban Chicago, who started the Walter Cronkite Fan Club and stayed in touch with Cronkite through the years, as he related Friday night in this Chicago Sun-Times column. Here?s a pretty darn good observation about his chosen profession, from a 1996 Cronkite interview - ?A professional journalist recognizes his or her prejudices and biases and avoids them in writing and reporting. There?s no place in journalism for biased reporting on the front page. There is no place for subjective, personal opinions to creep in.? Now, they'll be able to watch the Apollo 11 mission recreated in real time on the Web, follow Twitter feeds of transmissions between Mission Control and the spacecraft, and even get an e-mail alert when the lunar module touches down. Those features are part of a new Web site from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum commemorating the moon mission and Kennedy's push to land Americans there first. "Putting a man on the moon really did unite the globe," said Thomas Putnam, director of the JFK Library. "We hope to use the Internet to do the same thing." The Web site ? WeChooseTheMoon.org ? goes live at 8:02 a.m. Thursday, 90 minutes before the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 launch from Cape Canaveral, Fla. It will track the capsule's route from the Earth to the Moon, ending with the moon landing and Armstrong's walk ? in real time, but 40 years later. Internet visitors can see animated recreations of key events from the four-day mission, including when Apollo 11 first orbits the moon and when the lunar module separates from the command module, as well as browse video clips and photos and hear the radio transmission between the astronauts and NASA flight controllers. The site also connects the mission back to Kennedy, who first set the goal to have a man on the moon by the end of the decade during a May 25, 1961, speech before Congress. The Web site's name was taken from another speech Kennedy gave in 1962, when he said: "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone and one which we intend to win." Kennedy was assassinated six years before Armstrong set foot on the moon, but the Web site also features photos showing the president's deep interest in the space program, including ones of him watching Alan Shepard become the first American in space. While the main goal is to offer people a chance to again experience the excitement of the moon mission, Putnam said he also hopes it inspires people to tackle the issues facing the country today, such as global warming or poverty. Remember that in the Southern Hemisphere, it's the dead of winter and their QRN levels are at their lowest levels of the year. Cowboy up, brave the static crashes, and you might find some juicy multipliers!TECHNICAL TOPICS AND INFORMATIONWhen splicing coaxial cables, Chet N8RA credits AA7FV for the following technique of creating an electrically and mechanically sound joint. Start by trimming your coax pieces to expose at least ?-inch of center conductor while stripping and folding back the jacket and shield braid, but not removing them. This leaves enough braid to connect across the splice. Connect the center conductors by soldering a short length of brass hobby tubing over them. Next, use a piece of the coax dielectric material obtained during cable trimming to fill the gap - slit it lengthwise so that it will slip over the soldered center conductor. Make one wrap of electrical tape to hold the dielectric in place. Overlap and solder the shield braids from each piece of cable. Return the jackets and trim so that their ends meet without overlap. Double-wrap the whole joint with electrical tape. Finally, lay a long finishing nail across the joint and wrap again. The nail keeps the cable from being flexed or kinked at the relatively fragile splice.Pete N4ZR reports that Carl K9LA, Propagation Editor of the Contest Compendium wiki, has begun populating its Propagation section with lots of useful material. You might check out his Propagation Planning for DXpeditions and Propagation Planning for Contests pages. In addition, Ray ND8L found a great primer on propagation by Bob Brown, NM7M. It's called "Prop101" and can be downloaded from the the DXAtlas web site as a ZIP file.And they said it couldn't be done! Here's the business end of Rick - a.k.a. "The Locust" - K6VVA's remote-control SO2R contest station. (Photo K6VVA) Fans of wire antennas are likely to have the Extended Double-Zepp (EDZ) design in their toolboxes. Particularly good as a Field Day antenna, the double EDZ can develop as much gain as a small Yagi on its design band and gives good coverage on other bands. How about going one more step to the quadruple EDZ? Mike WA6ZTY reports "owning a frequency" during this year's Field Day with one of these 200-foot monsters. Everything you want to know about the EDZ family begins with the June 1938 QST article by W2DB - available in the online QST archives to ARRL members. That roll of wire in the garage is getting nervous!Using plastic enclosures outside requires UV-resistant material or the sun eventually causes them to crack and fail. Kirk K4RO report, "I've just re-built an omega matching network for tuning the boom of my top tribander on 40 meters. The network is mounted at the top of the mast, above the antenna, and it is quite difficult to mount and service. The first design used a plastic box from the kitchen, and the second, a child's thick plastic lunchbox that lasted almost ten years. I have finally learned the hard way that it pays to buy an outdoor UV-rated enclosure for such hard to reach projects. I like the boxes sold at electrical supply houses. These boxes are designed to be used outdoors. They are easy to drill, and some have sturdy mounting holes that can be adapted for tower mounting." Kirk has posted some images of the new UV-resistant tuning unit online to give you some ideas.Jim KK6MC reminds us that when using feed line that isn't 50-ohms, using integral multiples of half-wavelengths of the feed line will repeat the impedance from one end to the other. So if you connect 75-ohm hardline or coax to a 50-ohm load, a radio will see a 50-ohm match every half-wavelength along the line. This allows you to use the widely available and cheap low-loss RG-6 designed for TV and video use without creating an impedance mismatch. One caveat, this will only work on a single band or on bands that are harmonically related, such as 144 and 432 MHz or 14 and 28 MHz.Getting ready for a digital contest? Don AA5AU has developed a set of printable function key labels using a spreadsheet and they are available for downloading on his great RTTY Web site. Just print them and cut them out with scissors ("Don't run with those!" - Mom). They are easy to attach them to the keyboard.Digital TV may be less susceptible to the usual types of TVI, but as more people add antennas and preamps to receive the signals in fringe areas, overload from nearby ham transmitters may be a problem. Since most DTV signals are now in the high-VHF or UHF channels above 2 meters, a high-pass filter with a cutoff frequency below channel 7 (174 MHz) would work well. Microwave Filter Company series 3378 head-end filters are an example. They can be installed between an antenna and DTV receiver or preamp. Adding some common-mode ferrite chokes on the feed line can also reduce pickup of strong HF and VHF signals that could cause overload problems, as well. Even local paging and FM broadcast stations can cause overload problems - notch filters, such as those made by Winegard, help in these situations. (Thanks, Paul W9AC and Jim K9YC)If you have a four-square antenna, a resistive load is usually used to get rid of out-of-phase power. Dean N6BV suggests having the ability to route that power to a low dipole, instead. The low-power signal will make other stations aware of your presence on the frequency that might not hear your low-angle signal. And vice-versa - you will be aware of other local stations before firing up a CQ.Technical Web Site of the Week - Just how hot is that transistor? Save your fingertip and use a non-contact infra-red thermometer. Omega Instruments sells a number of such devices, starting in the $80 range and Harbor Freight is another excellent source. (Thanks, Bob WA2CKY and Bill W6WRT)CONVERSATIONOn Your MarksIn considering the impact of technology and connectivity on radiosport, it's pretty obvious that while the effects of so much information can be to dull the radio "know how" required of contesters, there are also lots of opportunities for new types of contests that present plenty of challenges in their own way.For example, I recently learned of a hybrid geocaching-orienteering contest that combines radio, navigation, and physical fitness. The contest is run as a kind of road rally, with each team or individual starting in a staggered sequence. They are initially provided with a set of GPS coordinates for a geocache. Off they go in search of the cache. When they find the cache, what it contains is the frequency of the first hidden transmitter! The GPS receiver gets stashed and out comes the portable beam and handheld radio. Attached to the hidden transmitter are the coordinates for the next geocache, and so forth. The best time through the entire string wins. That sounds like a LOT of fun to me and it would be easy to extend to mobile operating over a wider area.Here's another idea - what if multipliers "evaporated" over the course of a contest? Instead of just allowing duplicate contacts, though, what if the idea was to sustain "coverage" of a multiplier? Like the board game Go, competitors "cover" a multiplier by working someone in that region. For example, let the grid fields (CN, EM, FN, and so forth) be the regions. By working someone in that grid field, the region is considered "covered" for some amount of time - maybe one hour. After that hour expires, you have to work someone else in that region to "re-cover" the multiplier. Imagine trying to keep a marker on every square over 48 hours! Perhaps the Radio Go contest could be sponsored by a rotator repair company! Extended to multiple bands as in the figure, this could keep even a big station quite busy. Imagine a 160 through microwave "coverage contest" that measured one's ability to maintain communication over as wide a range as possible for as long as possible. That's similar to a DX contest, but with the added element that once worked, a multiplier needed to be "kept alive" by making more contacts.Imagine the strategic elements involved! Would it be better to CQ in order to attract callers from the regions? Or would Search-and-Pounce work out better? Likely, there would have to be a balance worked out between the rate at which needed multipliers call in and the need for new multipliers. It would certainly make Sunday more interesting in a DX contest! To make the decision, one would have to understand propagation, the capabilities of one's self and the station, gauge participation, have effective tools for measuring performance and guiding decisions, and so forth. Quite a challenge!You probably have your own ideas. I think we should have a weekend set aside as "Experimental Contest Day" to try out some of these great ideas! Initially, the contests could use paper logging and display tools, but if interest was strong enough, software would surely follow. It's a "simple matter of programming", right? (the most dangerous four words in the English language) If linked together, stations could actually play a game of Radio Go - surrounding or blocking or securing regions to accumulate points, only to have propagation continually rearrange the game board! I got the Field Day Submission sent in to ARRL today.(7-25-2009) Being my first time I double checked everything the best I could. If we are approved for our submission we should score 1,452 points. When I plugged in the information to the ARRL submission form it calculated our score a bit higher than I did. Hopefully everything will be approved. By submitting the Summary sheet on-line we got an additional 50 points. Get all the points we can right!! I have already received the ARRL response email back verifying the submission was received. I figured I would go for as many points as possible in case we lose some somewhere else. In going over the logs....it was easy to see that by not operating CW we lost a lot of points. CW QSO's are worth 2 points apiece. We had 63 digital mode contacts (also 2 pts) for a total of 120 points. Bonus points...if all are approved by ARRL totaled 830 points. Bonus points this year included the following..... GOTA station Emergency power Media Publicity Set-up in a public place Information booth Site visit by an elected official....Mayor and County Commissioner Site visit by served agency....EMA (Alvin) Youth participation Submission of Summary sheet to ARRL electronically Documetation to support the bonus points above were submitted to ARRL by mail. Like I stated earlier I am new at this and I doubled checked everything I could think of. My next effort will be to get the certificates of appreciation printed up for the businesses and others who donated items for the raffle and the meal. Once the certificates are distributed...FD 2009 will be in the books. Thanks again to everyone who helped make Field Day 2009 fun and successful. When I plugged in the information to the ARRL submission form it calculated our score a bit higher than I did. Hopefully everything will be approved. By submitting the Summary sheet on-line we got an additional 50 points. Get all the points we can right!! I have already received the ARRL response email back verifying the submission was received. I figured I would go for as many points as possible in case we lose some somewhere else. In going over the logs....it was easy to see that by not operating CW we lost a lot of points. CW QSO's are worth 2 points apiece. We had 63 digital mode contacts (also 2 pts) for a total of 120 points. Bonus points...if all are approved by ARRL totaled 830 points. Bonus points this year included the following..... GOTA station Emergency power Media Publicity Set-up in a public place Information booth Site visit by an elected official....Mayor and County Commissioner Site visit by served agency....EMA (Alvin) Youth participation Submission of Summary sheet to ARRL electronically Documetation to support the bonus points above were submitted to ARRL by mail. Like I stated earlier I am new at this and I doubled checked everything I could think of. My next effort will be to get the certificates of appreciation printed up for the businesses and others who donated items for the raffle and the meal.
