And I apologize for the delay but I am just back in the office yesterday from the holidays and a business trip to California and just starting to handle email. There is honestly very little that can be done with something like this. It has to be a continual thing with a pattern that the FCC can easily check if the information is provided to them by the OO program, and then any action by the FCC will be contingent on the other things on their plate. This isn't going to be a high priority item. However I will pass this on to the OO Coordinator here at HQ so he is aware of it in case he has other reports, etc. Thanks again and 73 Dan Henderson, N1ND Regulatory Information Manager ARRL, the national association for Amateur Radio? 860-594-0236 dhenderson at arrl.org From: Noel A. I remarked on the unusual call and asked for it phonetically and the gentleman confirmed it phonetically. We chatted a bit and he told me of his Inverted Vee, his 500 watt output, his all-Heathkit station with the exciter loafing along at 40 watts, and the fact that his receive sensitivity had improved two-fold when he installed a balun "at the end of the inverted vee." When I asked him what he meant, he said that he was feeding the antenna with ladder line. Dave gave me his QTH as Thornville, Ohio, stating that is was just a little south of Columbus. After the QSO I remained a bit puzzled, so I went to your website and typed his call into the call finder, coming up blank. Communications in and out of Haiti have been disrupted. The ARRL encourages US amateurs to be aware of the emergency operations on the following frequencies: 7.045 and 3.720 MHz (IARU Region 2 nets), 14.265, 7.265 and 3.977 MHz (SATERN nets), and 14.300 MHz (Intercontinental Assistance and Traffic Net); the International Radio Emergency Support Coalition (IRESC) is also active on EchoLink node 278173. There was no firm estimate on how many people were killed by Tuesday's quake. Haitian President Rene Preval said the toll could be in the thousands: "Let's say that it's too early to give a number." On Wednesday afternoon, Fred Moore, W3ZU, assisted Jean-Robert Gaillard, HH2JR, with a phone patch to his friend Ariel in Miami. "It's bad, it literally is bad," Gaillard told Ariel. "We don't know how many people are dead. We do not know what to expect. It's chaos, I'm telling you -- it's real chaos. We are really in a disaster area. It's really a war zone. Many, many buildings in the downtown area are stripped from the ground with many people buried underneath them - you name it, it's bad." Gaillard, who lives in Port-au-Prince, was using his neighbor's generator to make the contact. "It's really chaotic. I've never been in a war, but this is what a war zone would be like. Dead bodies all over the place, dead bodies buried. All I can tell you is that I'm okay, my house is okay. We've had 30 aftershocks, the main one yesterday. We are expecting some more shocks, so I'm a bit nervous to be inside the house."The 7.0 earthquake struck 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince, the island nation's capital. "The scope of the disaster clearly shows that the response to this is going to be a long term effort," said ARRL Media and Public Relations Manager Allen Pitts, W1AGP. "The ARRL has been in contact with communications leaders of the American Red Cross and Salvation Army, as well as other key Amateur Radio operators throughout the region. As teams from the hundreds of responding agencies worldwide are formed for deployment, many will have Amateur Radio components. ARRL is committed to providing communications aid to our served agencies and working with the international community in this time of crisis. At this time there are no known requests from agencies for amateurs to travel to Haiti, but this can change. If it develops that there are ARES? assignments for a deployment in Haiti, these will be vetted and processed through each Section's Section Emergency Coordinators." Directors, Vice Directors and ARRL Board officers will be in attendance. The meeting will be preceded on Thursday, January 14 with meetings of the Administration and Finance Committee and the Programs and Services Committee. The Administration and Finance (A&F) Committee is chaired by Northwestern Division Director Jim Fenstermaker, K9JF. This committee studies, advises and makes recommendations for all administration and financial matters of the League, including recommending the annual budget to the Board, making recommendations in regard to staff management and monitoring investment of ARRL funds. The Programs and Services Committee (PSC), headed by Midwest Division Director Bruce Frahm, K0BJ, studies, advises and makes recommendations for all programs and services provided by the League, including operating activities and the Field Organization. Reports on the 2010 Annual Meeting will be available next week. Read more here. + ARRL On-the-Air: Warm Up with the ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes!Get on the air for the 2010 January VHF Sweepstakes. VHF weak-signal operators will be on the bands in force the weekend of January 23-25 as the ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes hits the airwaves. This contest gives the VHFer in all of us a chance to do some contesting during the winter months. ARRL Contest Branch Manager Sean Kutzko, KX9X said that January may not seem like the ideal time to hold a VHF+ contest: "After all, sporadic-E propagation is most commonly associated with summer months; however, the propagation gods like to surprise and confound, and there have been plenty of QSOs made via sporadic-E in the colder months through the years. Plenty of other chances for enhancement exist as well, thanks to tropospheric ducting and auroral propagation. Thanks to the advent of WSJT software, making QSOs via meteor scatter in the wee hours of the morning on 6 and 2 meters has never been easier. You have plenty of opportunities to make long-haul QSOs on the VHF+ bands in January!" Read more here. Amateur Radio in Space: ARISS Notes Record Number of ISS-to-School Contacts When the Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) program began coordinating ISS-to-school contacts in 2001, only one school -- Luther Burbank Elementary School in Burbank, Illinois -- participated. Ten years later, more than 120 schools participated in the ARISS program in 2009 alone. The number of ARISS-coordinated ISS-to-school contacts has climbed dramatically since that first contact in 2000. In 2001, there were 42 contacts, and in 2002, there were 40 contacts. During the first five years of the program -- 2000-2004 -- there was an average of 31.4 QSOs between the ISS and schools. In 2004, ARISS only conducted 35 contacts -- the lowest in its 10 year history -- but in 2005, 55 schools had contacted the ISS through the program. In 2006, there were 47 QSOs, 75 QSOs in 2007 and 62 in 2008. The 121 QSOs in 2009 show a jump of 95 percent over the 2008 numbers -- setting an ARISS record for the number of contacts. According to NHC experts, advancements in track forecasts are making it possible for forecasters to provide greater lead time. Tropical storm watches will be issued when tropical storm conditions are possible along the coast within 48 hours. Tropical storm warnings will be issued when those conditions are expected within 36 hours. This is an increase of 12 hours from those issued in previous years. Hurricane season runs from May 15-November 30 in the Eastern Pacific and on June 1-November 30 for the Atlantic Basin. Khrystyne Keane, K1SFA This map shows the rainfall in Puerto Rico from the San Felipe hurricane in 1928. Click here to see the full-size image. For several hundred years, many hurricanes in the West Indies were named after the particular saint's day on which the hurricane occurred: In his 1938 book Hurricanes, Ivan R. Tannehill describes the major tropical storms of recorded history and mentions many hurricanes that were named after saints. On July 26, 1825, Hurricane Santa Ana struck Puerto Rico with exceptional violence. Hurricane San Felipe (the first) and Hurricane San Felipe (the second) also hit Puerto Rico on September 13 in both 1876 and 1928. During World War II, the practice of giving hurricanes women's names became widespread in weather map discussions among forecasters, especially Air Force and Navy meteorologists who plotted the movements of storms over the wide expanses of the Pacific Ocean. In 1953, the United States abandoned a confusing two year old plan to name storms by the phonetic alphabet in use at the time (Able, Baker, Charlie and so on) when a new, international phonetic alphabet was introduced. That year, the United States began using female names for storms. The practice of naming hurricanes solely after women came to an end in 1978 when men's and women's names were included in the Eastern North Pacific storm lists. In 1979, male and female names were included in lists for the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center (NHC). They are now maintained and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). There are six lists of hurricane names and they are used in rotation. This means that the 2010 list will be used again in 2016. According to the NHC, the only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name on a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity such as 2005's Hurricane Katrina). If that occurs, the offending name is stricken from the list and another name is selected to replace it at the WMO annual meeting. Check out the list of retired names on the NHC Web site. Several names have been changed since the lists were created. For example, on the 2007 list (which will be used again in 2013), Dorian has replaced Dean, Fernand has replaced Felix and Nestor has replaced Noel. For 2010, Colin replaced Charley, Fiona replaced by Frances, Igor replaced by Ivan and Julia replaced by Jeanne. Before 1979 -- when the first permanent six-year storm name list began -- some storm names were simply not used anymore. For example, in 1966, "Fern" was substituted for "Frieda," and no reason was cited. There are only 22 names on each list since the WMO does not use names that begin with Q, U, Y or Z. The names for 2010 are Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Hermine, Igor, Julia, Karl, Lisa, Matthew, Nicole, Otto, Paula, Richard, Shary, Thomas, Virginie and Walter. In the event that more than 21 named tropical cyclones occur in the Atlantic basin in a season, additional storms will take names from the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta and so on. If a storm forms in the off-season, it will take the next name in the list based on the current calendar date. For example, if a tropical cyclone formed on December 28, it would take the name from the previous season's list of names. If a storm formed in February, it would be named from the subsequent season's list of names. You can find lists of names for storms on the NHC Web site for every region of the globe, including the Eastern North, Central North and Western North regions of the Pacific Ocean, Australia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines and the Northern and Southwest portions of the Indian Ocean. Now you know! Solar UpdateThe Sun, as seen on Thursday, January 14, 2010 from NASA's SOHO Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope. This MDI (Michelson Doppler Imager) image is taken in the continuum near the Ni I 6768 Angstrom line. The most prominent features are the sunspots. This is very much how the Sun looks like in the visible range of the spectrum. Tad "Blinded alike from sunshine and from rain" Cook, K7RA, reports: Recent growing sunspot activity remains strong. Weekly averages of daily sunspot numbers over the nine weeks from November 12-January 13 were 9, 12.6, 0, 1.9, 21.1, 31.4, 21.9, 14.6 and 26.4. Sunspot region 1035 re-emerged as region 1040 on January 7 and his grown steadily. For January 7-13, the total area of region 1040 -- as expressed in millionths of a solar hemisphere -- was 80, 40, 70, 130, 300, 300 and 380. It has passed the 0 degree meridian (the imaginary vertical line on the visible Sun that faces straight toward Earth), but looks as if it has perhaps another 5 or 6 days before it crosses the Sun's western horizon. Look for more information in the Solar Update, available on the ARRL Web site on Friday, January 15. For more information concerning radio propagation, visit the ARRL Technical Information Service Propagation page. This week's "Tad Cookism" brought to you by John Keats' The Eve of St Agnes. + In the Workshop: Deadline for Second Homebrew Challenge ApproachingAll entries for the Second ARRL Homebrew Challenge must be received in the ARRL Lab no later than close of business on February 28, 2010. Since that is a Sunday, the judges will accept entries arriving with the first mail delivery on Monday, March 1, 2010. In 2006, the ARRL sponsored a successful competition for a 5 W, 40 meter voice/CW transceiver that could be built for $50. This second Homebrew Challenge offers an opportunity to boost that power to 50 W with an amplifier built from no more than $125 of parts. Rules, subsequent requests for clarification and responses, as well as a list of prizes, can be found on the ARRL Homebrew Challenge Web page. The ARRL Contest Update Sees Circulation Milestone The December 23 and January 6 issues of the ARRL Contest Update newsletter cracked another barrier with more than 25,000 subscribers. Containing material that goes beyond straight contest reporting, subscribers to the Contest Update find it full of all types of useful material. The newsletter -- available free to ARRL members and published every two weeks by e-mail or Web access -- got its start as a modest text-only bulletin in March 2002. Having expanded its coverage to topics of interest to any active ham, the newsletter's byline and mission became "News and Techniques for the Active Operator" in 2008 as it pioneered the ARRL's graphic newsletter format. A typical newsletter contains news and human interest stories, press releases about new products for hams, photos and links to multimedia content, an editorial segment, a big section of technical items that any ham can put to work -- and even a chuckle or two. You will also find contest results from your state's QSO party, as well as a calendar of upcoming contests and due dates for contest logs. Why not give the newsletter a try? Back issues are available online. To sign up for free delivery, log in to the ARRL Web site with your call sign and password, then click "Member Data page" and "Modify membership data." At the bottom of the page, click the box next to "ARRL Contest Update (biweekly contest newsletter)" and you're ready to read! Ham radio club members will be collecting donations in the front lobby of the Bloomington South gym at tonight's boys basketball game against Edgewood. All donations will go directly to Jacmel, Haiti to assist those children who were devastated by the recent earthquake. Donations will also be collected at the game next Friday night versus Martinsville, and by mail. Amateur Radio Club members will also be collecting donations at school and by mail through January 31st. Checks can be made payable to Bloomington High School South, and marked for the Ham Radio Haiti Relief Fund. The Hands and Feet Project is a 501c3 organization dedicated to caring for orphans and abandoned children around the world. They established the village for children in Jacmel, Haiti in 2004. Drex Stuart, known to ham radio operators by call letters N9CIA and HH5SD, along with his wife Jo are part of the staff in Haiti. Drex previously served as a minister in the Evansville, Indiana and Owensboro, Kentucky areas, as well as a chaplain for the Indiana State Police. His son, Mark, was the lead singer in the Christian band Audio Adrenaline. The band is responsible for establishing the Hands and Feet Project. Mark was also a licensed ham radio operator at one time, and was also in Haiti when the earthquake occurred. Donations can be mailed to Bloomington High School South, Ham Radio Haiti Relief Fund, 1965 S. Walnut Street, Bloomington, IN 47401. EB9GF, who is integrated in the Spanish Red Cross contingent, was able to contact the colleagues from the Radio Club Dominicano (RCD). The RCD has currently two VHF repeaters in use for operations: - 146.970 (-600), CTCSS 100 Hz. Placed in the Dominican Republic. Please note that the old frequency 147.970 seems to be wrong. - 145.350 (-600), CTCSS 100 Hz. New repeater active near the border with Haiti. RCD initially reported that their team crossed the Haitian border at 10:50 hours Haitian time arriving at the Dominican Embassy in Haiti at 14:29 hours when they started installing and testing their equipment. Within a few hours though, reports via the RCD Facebook page confirmed by a long telephone conversation between Hugo Ram?n HI8VRS and Ramon Sanyoyo V, XE1KK reported that the HI8RCD team of eight amateurs, were back in the border town of Jimani (Dominican Republic). Their convoy, which included other non related Dominicans, was assaulted and one person reported dead. The Radio Amateurs were uninjured but decided to leave the capital for safety and return to the border unescorted. They report the situation as extremely unsafe and scary. The repeaters they have installed remain in service linking the Haitian and Dominican capitals, and are being used by the Red Cross and Civil Defense since there is no other way to communicate. The station at the Embassy in Haiti could not be activated though. To confirm, all members of the HCD team are safe and have returned to Jimanji in the Dominican Republic. In other reports, John Henault HH6JH who is engaged in Missionary work with homeless children in Port au Prince continues to make contacts on 20m using power from a neighbour's generator and very pleased that amateur radio enabled him to let his friends in the USA know he was alive. Another radio amateur in the country, Pierre Petry HH2/HB9AMO who works for the UN food program is also safe. However nothing is known at this stage of about another ten hams in Haiti. Thanks to Ismael EA4FSI, Cesar HR2P and Jim VK3PC for their reports. Will be updated. LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - The state agency that gives out radio identification codes could run out of codes used by emergency radio operators across the state by this fall. The Integrated Public Safety Commission has already assigned 52,000 of its 64,000 available IDs to radios serving mostly first-responders across Indiana. The IDs enable radio operators to communicate across the state and outside a local network. Commission implementation director Dave Smith says the demand for the frequencies has risen since 9/11. But Tippecanoe County emergency management director Mark Kirby says the commission granted many requests without questioning the need for them. Smith says the commission hopes to expand the network to include up to 128,000 IDs but will limit new ones in the meantime. --- Information from: Journal and Courier, http://www.jconline.com _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Powerful Free email with security by Microsoft. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/196390710/direct/01/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Thanks to the advent of WSJTsoftware, making QSOs via meteor scatter in the wee hours of the morning on 6 and 2 meters has never been easier. You have plenty of opportunities to make long-haul QSOs on the VHF+ bands in January!" > > Kutzko said that getting on the VHF bands is easy. Technician class licensees have permission to use all amateur bands above 50 MHZ, and the antennas for VHF frequencies are comparatively smaller than their HF counterparts. A dipole for 6 meters is less than 10 feet long and most modern transceivers come with 50 MHz built-in. So, string up a dipole for 6 meters and see what you can work! > > "While most contest QSOs will be made using SSB and CW," Kutzko said, "don't forget about FM simplex. There are numerous stations that enjoy 2 meter FM simplex QSOs, especially if you live near a large population center. Just be sure to keep the national 2 meter calling frequency of 146.52 MHz clear of contest activity. Don't neglect the higher bands, either -- 222 MHz, 432 MHz and 1.2 GHz and up will see activity this weekend, too." > > The 2010 ARRL January VHF Sweepstakes runs from 1900 UTC Saturday, January 23 through 0359 UTC Monday, January 25. The tremor hit on Tuesday, January 12th at 2153 UTC. According to the US Geological Survey the epicenter was about 10 miles south-west of Port- au-Prince and hit a magnitude 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The first tremor was followed by two aftershocks with magnitudes of 5.9 and 5.0. Soon after the first jolt amateur radio first responders were activated in Cuba to listen for any distress calls from is Caribbean neighbor. Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF, is in the newsroom with more. -- HH2JR: " I am able to communicate for the first time. I hope you are copying me OK. The situation is chaotic and I am only alive thanks to god. Over." -- That's just part of a conversation captured by Newsline listener Brian Crow, K3VR, on Wednesday, January 13th as hams in quake ravaged Haiti began returning to the airwaves. Jean-Robert Gaillard, HH2JR, was one of the first and with Fred Moore, W3ZU, running the patch he described what Haiti was like when he finally was able to get a chance to view the devastation first hand: -- HH2JR: "Yesterday was really bad but I managed today to go and visualize -- myself and a couple of friends. We took some pictures and its really chaotic. I've never been through a war but its what a war (signal fade). Dead bodies all over the place and dead bodies (signal fade) to be buried." -- HH2JR also described the aftershocks: -- HH2JR: "I'm OK and my house is OK and that's all I can tell you. (signal fade) We have had thirty aftershocks, Repeat three zero aftershocks since the big one yesterday at ten (minutes) to five in the afternoon. Over to you." -- That contact was among the first of the personal ham radio on scene accounts of living through a killer quake but not the first ham radio response to this disaster. Soon after the quake hit, CQ Magazine editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, put out an e-mail alert that quoted IARU Region 2 Area C Emergency Coordinator, Arnie Coro, CO2KK. Corro said that he was already coordinating a multi-national response by hams with organized nets on 7.045 and 3.720 MHz. The net control stations were identified as CO8WM and CO8RP located in the city of Santiago de Cuba. According to Corro these nets were in direct contact with the National Seismology Center of Cuba located in that city. CO2KK asked hams world-wide to monitor the two net frequencies, but to also keep them clear of non-essential traffic. International Radio Emergency Support Coalition is also active on EchoLink node 278173. On Wednesday the ARRL put out a notice saying that amateur radio operators should also be aware that emergency traffic pertaining to the Haitian earthquake is expected on the Salvation Army SATERN net frequencies. According to SATERN's leader, Major Pat McPherson, those frequencies are 14.265, 7.265 and 3.977 MHz. The Salvation Army is accepting health and welfare traffic requests on its Web site. As to the health and welfare of hams living in Haiti. Part of that was covered in the January 13 edition of The Daily DX newsletter. It reported that the Reverend John Henault, HH6JH, made contact late Wednesday morning with the Intercontinental Assistance and Traffic Net on 14.300 MHz. This is the IARU Global Center of Activity frequency for emergency communications. HH6JH said that he was safe, but had no power and no phone service. Also that he was operating on battery power and hoping to get a generator running later in the day. The newsletter also noted that Pierre Petry, HH2/HB9AMO who was in Cap Haitien about 140 km north of Port-au-Prince is okay. Petry is in Haiti working for the United Nations World Food Program. Daily DX also reports that members of two ham radio groups from the neighboring Dominican Republic, the Radio Club Dominicano (RCD) and Union Dominicana de Radio Aficionados (UDRA) are preparing to go to Port au Prince. Once there the team will be installing an emergency radio communications station operating as HI8RCD/HH and a mobile station. The team of Dominican Republic Amateur Radio operators includes HI8PGG, HI8FLB, HI8CJG, HI8DBF, HI8SAR, HI8JLH, HI8ROD and HI3TEJ. The situation in Haiti is still chaotic and literally changing from moment to moment. The most important thing is to keep 3.720, 7.045, 7.265, 14.265 and 14.300 clear for emergency and priority traffic and quake relief nets on these frequencies. We will post updates in text form on our Newsline Facebook web update page as they become available. To access it just go to facebook.com and friend Amateur Radio Newsline. And for the Amateur Radio Newsline, I'm Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF, in Los Angeles. Don -- Haiti's ambassador to the United States is Raymond Joseph. He called the quake a major catastrophe, telling the various news services that he is calling on friends of Haiti to come to the country's aid. (ARNewslineT, CQ, ARRL, SATERN, Daily DX. The meeting was called to order at 9:07am by Phil, W9LVY. SECRETARY?s REPORT: The minutes of the 12-19-2009 meeting of the CCARC were read by Tom, KB9WSL. The minutes were approved as presented without additions or corrections. TREASURER?s REPORT: None REPEATER: Phil, W9LVY reported the 450 repeater is up and running with the new controller. He said the repeater and controller are working well. FIELD DAY: Tom, KB9WSL stated he will begin making preparations beginning in the next month or so. Tom stated he is trying to learn PSK 31 so the club can work digital modes and get 2 points for digital contacts. He would also like to see more CW operations for 2010 if possible. If anyone has ideas or suggestions for FD 2010 let KB9WSL know. OLD BUSINESS: Bob, K9AWH, reported that the sheriffs department gave the EMA several VHF portables and a mobile radio or two. EMA director Alvin Beckman passed the radios on to the Club if we can make use of them. Dave, K9DVL stated the radios could probably be re-programmed with software. Dave will check out the radios and see about getting programming set-up. Phil also reported that Alvin stated that utility poles are still in the works to be used for an HF antenna for the Club at EMA. Phil also reported that he would like to get a packet station set-up at the EMA for emergency communications work. He said Alvin Beckman with EMA thinks he can get a laptop for the club to be used at the EMA communications room. The computer could be available in a month or two. Two club members have also said they have computers they would be willing to donate to the club. NEW BUSINESS: Phil, W9LVY, reported that he sent information to the Indiana Repeater Council regarding coordination of the club?s repeaters. However, IRC advised him the information will not be in the printed repeater directory due to our late submission. Phil stated he had submitted the information prior to the January 15th deadline. He will contact ARRL to see what might be done. (* as of 1-18-2010 the CCARC repeaters ARE listed on the IRC web-page). Phil also reported that a new Emergency Coordinator is needed for Cass county since Chuck, N9PMW resigned from the post due to his military service. Phil stated that the EC must be a general class or higher licensee and be an ARRL member. Anyone interested in the position should contact Phil. W9LVY. Message-ID: Anyone listening to Chicago radio in the 70's will remember the commercials for the US 30 dragstrip......"Sunday..Sunday..Sunday ! and "where the great ones run"!!! Jan C. Gabriel died Sunday. Or as he might say, "Sunday! Sunday!! SUNDAY!!" The voice of the once ubiquitous radio commercials for "Smoking U.S. 30" drag strip, Mr. Gabriel was also the longtime announcer at the old Santa Fe Speedway and the producer of "Super Chargers," a nationally syndicated motor sports television show. He was 69 when he died of complications from polycystic kidney disease on Jan. 10 in his Lombard home, said his friend and business partner Denise Dorman. The commercials for the U.S. 30 drag strip in northwest Indiana were conceived by the track's owner, Ben Christ, who wanted to make sure everyone knew his business was open on Sunday. Christ enlisted Steve Cronen of Starbeat Recording Studios in Deerfield to produce an ad that conveyed the excitement of racing while leaving no question as to the day of the event. "It proved very difficult to do," Cronen said. He recalled that some 50 announcers auditioned and were turned down, their voices simply not vibrant enough, before Mr. Gabriel was called in. A disc jockey who got his start doing sock hops, he had gained notice in racing circles with scintillating descriptions of the action at Santa Fe Speedway in Willow Springs. He read Christ's script once, and Cronen knew he had his man. "It was the excitement, the way he delivered that line. No one else was able to do that," Cronen said. "That's because he really loved racing." The script originally called for two announcers to trade intonations of "Sunday!" But the Scully tape recorder Mr. Gabriel used for his first take was set up with a delay that allowed him to handle the line himself, Cronen said. Christ liked it, and through the 1980s Mr. Gabriel came in every week during racing season to produce fresh commercials for both U.S. 30 and tracks around the country that Christ owned, making "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" a national phenomenon of sorts. The spots ended with an echoing, "Where the great ones run!" also read by Mr. Gabriel. A native of Wisconsin who grew up in Palos Heights and graduated from Sandburg High School, Mr. Gabriel produced commercials for Community Discount stores and worked behind the microphone at WJOB in Hammond. Always fascinated by racing, he drove cars briefly in the 1960s and called the action at Santa Fe from 1968 to 1982. Beginning in 1982, he was for 12 years the producer and host of "Super Chargers," which, in addition to covering all forms of racing, was described by Dorman as "an oddball mash-up of celebrities and motor sports." Viewers tuning in might see baseball great Reggie Jackson at motorcycle racing school or actor Chuck Norris with Bears legend Walter Payton participating in a speedboat race. The show also provided serious coverage of stock car and drag racing. Through his production company, TV One Inc., Mr. Gabriel helped popularize monster truck competitions in the 1980s. Through his many accomplishments, he never tired of being best known for "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" Mr. Gabriel's first three marriages ended in divorce. He is survived by his wife, Teresa, and a daughter, Amanda. _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail: Free, trusted and rich email service. http://clk.atdmt.com/GBL/go/196390708/direct/01/ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... It's about an hour and a half long, and is quite intriguing. One point that came up is that the north magnetic pole is moving northwards, and the movement has accelerated in the last decades: http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2009/12/091224-north-pole-magnetic-russia-earth-core.html has a bit more on this topic. The upshot is that we may receive TA's in North America more regularly in future years, because the auroral zone tracks the magnetic pole, and the southern edge of the zone is moving north with the pole. The other point addresses a possible explanation for the surge in long distance receptions just as the K-index increases at the onset of a geomagnetic storm, as apparently the duct between the E and F layers becomes better defined at this time, and the duct allows transfer of long range signals with little loss compared with ground bounces. http://mysite.verizon.net/k9la/ has a number of articles about propagation, and 160m propagation in particular, and should soon contain the Powerpoint presentation on which the webinar was based. best wishes, Nick _________________________________________________________________ Your E-mail and More On-the-Go. URL: From kb9wsl at hotmail.com Mon Jan 25 16:35:10 2010 From: kb9wsl at hotmail.com (Tom Murray) Date: Mon, 25 Jan 2010 16:35:10 -0500 Subject: [Ccarc] recall Message-ID: New FDA Salmonella Warning 1.2 Million pounds of Italian sausage products including salami/salame from Daniele International Company's products sold in Walmart, Costco and other retail outlets Cases in 38 states. Daniele International Inc., an establishment with operations in Pascoag and Mapleville, R.I., is recalling approximately 1,240,000 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) varieties of Italian sausage products, including salami/salame, in commerce and potentially available to customers in retail locations because they may be contaminated with Salmonella, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. FSIS became aware of the problem during the course of an ongoing investigation of a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella serotype Montevideo illnesses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), FSIS, state health and agriculture departments, and Daniele International are cooperating in this investigation. The CDC has posted information about the multi-state outbreak on its website (http://www.cdc.gov/salmonella) but the investigation is ongoing, and has not yet definitively identified a food vehicle(s). During the course of that investigation, a sample of product found in commerce was tested on behalf of a participating state department of health and found to contain Salmonella, which FSIS has a zero tolerance for in RTE products. The product tested was similar to products bought by customers who later became sick in the Montevideo investigation, but currently there is not a direct link. The Salmonella strain in the tested product does not appear to be the Montevideo strain of interest and further testing of the sample is ongoing at a state health partner laboratory. FSIS is continuing to work with the CDC, affected state public health partners, and the company on the investigation and will update the public on the progress of this investigation as information becomes available. In addition, the company presented information to FSIS and took the additional action to voluntarily recall all products in commerce associated with black pepper, which the company believes is a possible source of contamination. The products subject to recall include [View Labels, PDF One, PDF Two]: 10-ounce packages of "DANIELE NATURALE SALAME COATED WITH COARSE BLACK PEPPER." (see below) Please call your State Representative and Senator and express these concerns with them. Try to impress upon them the idea that there are many, many people who both earn a living and assist various emergency groups with two way radio. We need to see additional exemptions from the law. Jack starts his letter with deep regret... ------------ Forwarded message ------------ From: JCoupejr Date: Jan 26, 2010 Subject: [K3PDR] HB 2070 - Cell Phone Use To: Stewart Greenleaf Hi Stewart, I was so sorry to hear about your home. I hope all is well with you and your family. I know our many volunteers tried valiantly to save it. I am writing today about HB 2070, restricting the use of cell phones while driving. While personally I stand to make monies on sales of hand free cell phone devices for drivers, and indeed they should be using them, I am also concerned that the house version of the bill makes no provision for the use of either commercial or amateur two way radios. While the house bill exempts emergency workers and volunteers responding to a call, it does NOT exempt many individuals who routinely use two-way radios in the normal course of their business, such as taxi drivers and school bus drivers who by Commonwealth regulations, must have radios installed in their vehicles; contractors, trash haulers, delivery services and many other businesses. Also, amateur radio operators, an integral part of emergency communications, would be adversely affected by the bill. In fact, under the house version, even our local, county and commonwealth municipal workers who almost all use two way radios as part of their daily routines would no longer be able to use the radio when driving! Owning a business that provides wireless communications to many businesses and municipalities in our area, and as an active amateur radio operator for over 40 years, as well as my involvement with our emergency services, I researched the use of two-way radios in relationship to vehicle operations and have been unable to identify any accidents attributed to the use of a two-way radio while driving. On the other hand, I think all of us know of driving accidents attributable to the use of a cell phone or PDA. As a paramedic, I know we need to get drivers to focus on driving and not cell phone conversations. I have been using a speaker phone while on my cell phone in the car for years. I need to keep my eyes and concentration on the road. I also have been using two-way radios both in emergency services such as the ambulance as well as commercial areas and amateur radio. Speaking from many years of experience, the use of a two way radio while driving is not the same as a cell phone. In fact, most two-way conversations are limited in length to just a few moments. It's just not the same as using a cell phone. It is noteworthy that unlike a cell phone, two-way and amateur mobile radios use a microphone that is not held to the driver's head or ear to listen, but only near the mouth when speaking. Incoming messages are heard over a speaker in the vehicle; in essence nearly equivalent to the use of a speaker phone on a cell phone. Further, since commercial and amateur radios do not seem to present any history of driving problems, we may be legislating a problem that doesn't exist. Imagine, that every time a taxi driver, delivery clerk or municipal worker is called, he or she would need to find a place to pull over to simply acknowledge receiving the assignment, even if that acknowledgment was only a second or two in length! The act of pulling over to answer a brief radio message may actually create more traffic problems than it would solve. These individuals have been using two way radios for many years without a problem. I would request that you encourage the senate to add an exemption to their version of the bill for commercial and amateur radio two-way operations. It just doesn't seem to be a problem. Many thanks for your time and as always, if there is anything I can do to help, please call. Should the senate hold hearings on this bill, and you feel it would be appropriate, I would be happy to testify on behalf of the radio community. Hope to see you again soon!
